The Asian Beach Games is a multi-sport event held every two years among athletes representing countries from Asia. The games are regulated by the Olympic Council of Asia. The Asian Beach Games celebrate cooperation and unity despite differences. Athletes from a wide variety of nations are able to travel, meet new people, and bring back memories about the rest of the world to their home nations. The Asian Beach Games forge unity and friendship between their member nations by joining athletes, trainers, and officials together.

The 1st Asian Beach Games is schedule to begin in 2008 in Bali, Indonesia which includes non-Olympic, beach-oriented sports such as Surfing, Windsurfing, Sailing, Dragon Boat, Beach Volleyball, Beach Takraw, Beach Handball, Beach Soccer, Bodybuilding, Jet Skiing, Triathlon Marathon Swimming, Parasailing and Wood Ball.

Member nations with plentiful seashore are invited to host future Asian Beach Games. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), the highest governing body of sports in Asia, has awarded the right to Komite Olahraga Nasional Indonesia (KONI) to host the 1st Asian Beach Games in Bali in October 2008.

Many international beach sporting events are organized every year in Bali. But games like the Asian Beach Games, requires a specific plan with concentrated efforts involving various governmental and non-governmental sector for its success. To steer these diversified activities, the Bali Asian Beach Games Organising Committee (BABGOC) was formed on Mar 2006. BABGOC under the patronage of the Komite Olahraga Nasional Indonesia (KONI) and the city of Bali, in close cooperation with the Indonesian Government, is working diligently to meet the preparation schedules and also to stage and operate a sustainable Asian Beach Games, leading to a long-term legacy.

Enchanting Toba Lake in Parapat

Viewing this vast lake might make you believe that you're actually visiting an ocean instead of a lake. The atmosphere is so cool and refreshing, the view magnificent and breath-taking, for you can see mountains circling this area. Samosir Island is located proudly in the middle of the lake. Another lake inside Samosir Island makes this place more unique and interesting.

This lake is about 1,700 m2 in size with the depth of approximately 450 meters. About 906 above sea level, this lake hosts various interesting plants. Some people, viewing the sunrise and sunset around this area, claim that Toba manages to help them forget their problems even though only for a while.

Getting There

By renting a car from Medan to Parapat. Parapat is 185 kilometers away from Medan. It will take about 4 hours to reach this place. You can also ride a bus or join a tour to visit Toba Lake.

Numerous inns and hotels are available in Parapat. Some hotels even have their own swimming pools and jacuzzi.

You can ride a motorboat / ferry to reach Samosir Island.

Those who are interested in leather puppet shadow plays can see them in:

Wayang Golek / Wooden Puppets

You can view wayang golek performances in Agastya Art Institute—School for Narrators, Jalan Gedung Kiwo MJ I, performed every Saturday from 3 - 5 pm. At Nitour Inc. Jalan KH A. Dahlan 71, it is performed every day except Sunday from 11 am – 1 pm.

Wayang Orang / Dance Drama

The performance is held in Hotel Arjuna Plaza, Jalan P. Mangkubumi, every Thursday from 7 – 9 pm.

Ramayana Ballet

Unique and famous, this ballet is presented by 250 professional dancers at the open air theatre of Prambanan / Loro Jonggrang temple. The entire Ramayana epics is concised into 4 (four) episodes. Each night, one episode, and presented from 7.30 to 9.30 pm.

Visit Indonesia Year 2008 officially launched

Ministry of Culture and Tourism launched Visit Indonesia Year 2008 on Wednesday, with the main aim of luring up to 7 million foreign tourists and booking US$6.4 billion in foreign exchange income. The government held its first Visit Indonesia program in 1991, which was not particularly successful, increasing the number of foreign tourists by merely 400,000 from the year earlier, according to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). BPS data show that in 1991, around 2.5 million foreign tourists visited the country, from 2.1 million in the previous year.
